Chapter History

Chapter Beginning

Our Chapter was originally chartered in November 1980 as the Greater Florida Chapter of TAI, with fourteen charter members. Since its beginnings, it has sought to mirror the beliefs of its future namesake by proclaiming that quality education is a gateway through which we anyone can discover their unique purpose in the world. The awareness garnered from education and learning inspires us all to live the best life possible. For these reasons, our goal is to promote education and inspire our younger generations.  As such, it is our aim to achieve this goal by providing scholarship opportunities to deserving students in the Central Florida area, to further their education and enhance their future aspirations.

Name Change Initiative

In an effort to honor General Daniel "Chappie" James, Jr., a native of Pensacola Florida and America's first Black Four-Star General, the chapter membership organized a petition for a name change.  After completing the necessary biographical work and complying with all of the requirements laid out in the National TAI Bylaws, the petition was submitted.  On January 18, 1985, the National Office of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. approved the name change petition.

Central Florida Connection

Despite the name change, our chapter has remained intimately connected to many of the communities of Central Florida.  As other TAI chapters have ceased operations, our chapter has expanded its reach to accommodate the needs of those members who desire to remain active in achieving the goals of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc.  We currently enjoy wonderful connections to our region's major military base communities which include all active duty members civil servants, retirees, and defense industry contractors. We will endeavor to leverage these connections to continue to achieve our chapter's goals.
